Just a short walk from our restaurant lies the Archaeological Site of Baelo Claudia, one of the best-preserved Roman cities on the Iberian Peninsula, founded at the end of the 2nd century BC.

Baelo Claudia did not arise in this bay by chance. Its existence was deeply tied to the sea and trade, serving as a strategic point between North Africa and Europe. The Romans already knew what we still defend today: the richness of these waters is unmatched. This is where the famous Garum was produced, a highly prized fish sauce across the Roman Empire, made mainly from the tuna that crossed the Strait.

Walking through its forum, theatre and the remains of its ancient salting factories is like travelling through time and understanding why local gastronomy has such deep roots. After your cultural visit, we will be here to continue that tribute to local produce, this time with the unmistakable touch of our embers.

The Bolonia Dune: Living Nature Facing the Sea

Rising over the western end of the beach stands the impressive Bolonia Dune Natural Monument. More than 30 metres high and surrounded by a lush stone pine forest, this golden sand dune is a living spectacle, shaped every day by Tarifa's characteristic Levante winds.

Climbing to the top is a rite of passage for any visitor. The effort is rewarded with an unrivalled panoramic view: the contrast between the deep blue Atlantic, the green forest and, on clear days, the outline of the African coastline on the horizon.

Our advice? Make the climb first thing in the morning or late in the afternoon. After reaching the top of the dune, there is nothing better than recovering on our terrace, enjoying the best grilled meats in Bolonia while the sea breeze does the rest.

You cannot understand the identity of Bolonia and Tarifa without talking about wild almadraba bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus). This sustainable, environmentally respectful fishing technique, more than three thousand years old, is still practiced on our coast every spring, just as the tuna cross the Strait of Gibraltar towards the Mediterranean.

Almadraba tuna is not just a fish; it is a culinary jewel revered worldwide for its melt-in-the-mouth texture and intense flavour.
